Yesterday evening, Nick and I were reading through Google’s list of trends in 2013 in the United States. Interestingly enough, we were surprised to see CrossFit’s influence in a few areas related to lifestyle. I suppose we shouldn’t be too surprised since CrossFit is probably the fastest growing sport in the world and the health benefits and positive results related to the paleo diet are pretty hard to ignore.
Under “Diets” the Paleo diet was the number 1 trending, and beyond that the Mediterranean diet was number 3 and a Ketogenic diet was number 5. While number 3 and 5 aren’t exactly paleo, they carry similar ideals. Sadly, but also not surprising, number 2 and 4 were cleanse diets. Also along those lines, the number 5 item under the most searched “what is” is gluten. Somehow “what is twerking” was a more popular search… Under the topic most searched “Sports” CrossFit found it’s place at number 8 on the list, and under the most searched “workouts and exercises” CrossFit was number 2, right behind Insanity. I took a look at the Google trends for 2012 and none of these showed up that year, so it looks like CrossFit and the Paleo diet gained a lot of ground in the last year. On the heels of the announcement of the 2014 Games Season, Open registration begins on January 15th, and some people are predicting over 200,000 to sign up. We’ll see if 2014 sees as much growth in the sport as 2013.
Anyway, I thought these trends were interesting enough to share with all of you. Check out the rest of the Google trends for 2013 as you reflect on last year. I’ll be honest, some of the trends made me sad about the US people’s greatest interests/inquiries, but some were interesting and encouraging. I’m looking forward to seeing what 2014 brings us!
