Starting next week on July 31st and ending on August 4th the International Surf Festival will be taking place. This 5 day event will have different activities in the cities of Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, and Manhattan Beach. Obviously the main attraction is the Surfing Championships which is being held on Saturday the 3rd. Later on that day there will be two other events that have registrations still open to the public. The first is the 2 vs. 2 California Beach Volleyball tournament. I know we have some vball players in the gym and if you are interested this would be a great way to play some tough competition. All teams are guaranteed 2 games with the championship being played on Sunday the 4th. Price for a two man/woman team is $72. For those not interested in volleyball there is going to be a 2 mile soft sand race. The race will start on the north side of the pier and participants will run 1 mile out to the turn-around cone and then run back. There are plenty of divisions starting from ages 11-14 and going up to the 70 and over division. Race day registration starts at 7AM and is $25. The money collected from the runners will be going straight to the Mira Costa Boys and Girls Cross Country programs. On Sunday the 4th there will be a sand castle design contest which is free of charge. This event is designed for youths, 7 and under, and teens, 13-17. Also that day there will be a pier to pier swim. According to the website participants must pre-qualify for the race and that date has already come and gone. It still might be fun to watch hundreds of swimmers speed through the water to claim first place. Finally there will be a pier to pier paddle board race. This event does except registrations until August 3rd. The price will be $35 for anyone over 18 and $25 for participants under 17. I haven’t had the chance to see a paddle board race so this will be a perfect opportunity to see athletes compete in person. If you are not looking to take part in the Surf Festival it will be just as enjoyable to come and watch all the action that will be going on.
