April Challenge Details and New Services

By Marcus | In Challenges | on March 31, 2011

We had a few requests to move the start of the challenge and I agree that starting something as potentially lifestyle changing as this can be pretty daunting mid-week. Now the start will be as of April 4th, so you have NO excuse not to clean out the cupboards, go shopping and cooking this weekend and be ready to roll Monday! End date of the challenge will be May 4th, so you can celebrate Cinco de Mayo with your (hopefully more-Paleofied self) with a NorCal margarita and maybe even a plate of nachos.

Before you turn your nose up at the thought of eating Paleo, I’ll borrow the words of Robb Wolf. I’m willing to bet that you’ve likely eaten eggs and some fruit for breakfast before. I also bet that at some time in your life, you’ve eaten a salad with chicken breast for lunch. And you’ve also quite likely have had a dinner of steak and some grilled vegetables. All you need to do is string a bunch of those days together and guess what — you’re eating Paleo.

Here’s the details of what the challenge will entail…

Start date: April 4th at 12:01am

End date: May 4th at 11:59pm

Buy-in: $15 per person

Partners — you will be randomly partnered with another participant and your fates are somewhat tied together. If one cheats, you both cheat. And if you cheat, you’re out… so don’t cheat.

Pictures — yep, we’re going to require before and after pictures of everyone participating. I know, I know.  It’s a daunting feeling to think someone will see a picture of you in shorts and a sports bra (guys, you don’t have to wear a sports bra if you don’t want to).  The only ones to see the pictures will be your trainers and if you drop out, the before pictures will never see the light of day. However, if you’re a winner, we will likely be posting your pictures (faces can be blurred upon request).

Food logs — everyone will be required to join and create a food log at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/crossfitintrepid. While we encourage you to post daily, as long as your food log is updated every Monday with the previous week’s food, you will be fine. Exact measurements are not necessary, but if you want to — go for broke. Why are we requiring this? Not just to keep tabs on you, but some of you may get stumped when it comes to meal ideas and your fellow competitors may help spark an idea. Also, the group will be locked to only participants so you don’t have to worry about outside snarky comments.

You can declare your intention to participate in the comments here, but make sure you join the Yahoo group by Sunday night so I know you’re ready to go.

New Services

With your Whole30 challenge, it’s obvious how high an importance we place on solid nutrition. We’ve decided to roll out a few new services for those of you who find you need just a little more help.

Food Shopping

Do you find yourself baffled when you enter a supermarket, strolling each aisle and ending up with more junk foods than healthy ones? We’ll accompany you to the grocery store of your choice and help guide you to the best choices.

Pantry Raid

Does your cupboard have several canned goods that you’re not sure if they’re edible, much less Paleo? Are you having a hard time getting rid of junk foods and you’d rather someone else do the dirty work of trashing them? Let us be the steady hand for you, making sure your home isn’t a place of unhealthy temptation.

Meal Planning

Perhaps all of this is just too overwhelming and you’d like a little more guidance. We’ll work with you to build a weekly meal plan based on the Paleo foods you like to eat and ensure you’re preparing well-rounded meals. You’ll also get a shopping list to ensure you know just what to buy when you get to the store.

Send an email to any of the trainers to inquire about pricing!

I’m in! Can my “randomly assigned partner” be Marcus?

Jason, I saw your link last night to the Mr. T wall. It made me laugh so hard. What did you even google to find that treasure?!

you know why i love intrepid? because our trainers not only want us to eat healthier, they will COME TO OUR HOUSES or TO THE GROCERY STORE to help us do it! that’s commitment! i’m not making fun; i genuinely think that is really sweet of you guys. you have big hearts, and i love RAMS. :)

I once worked for a big fat man (380 lbs). He lost over 100 pounds calorie counting and utilizing a daily food log. He would carry around a single sheet of paper and would pull it out after every meal to jot down what he ate. I think if you try and food log by memory you are going to underestimate or forget what you are eating. My two cents…

not in. there is a known 4 days (when shivi is visiting) that i know i’ll be drinking and such… we’re going wine tasting! HOWEVER i’m in for the other 26 days. So, while I won’t be partnered up, I will be forcing myself to participate as much as possible! can i take a before picture too?!

    1. Marcus says:

      March 31, 2011 at 1:41 PM -

@Pooja — yes, you can take a before picture even if you don’t plan on entering the contest. That shopping list looks okay for you (vegetarian) minus the white potatoes and wild rice. For everyone else, remove the dairy (cream, butter, cheese, yogurt).

I am pretty sure Im in….. LOL Oh the dairy…… And the sugar….. UGH!!!!!!!!

I am in if I don’t have to do the whole partially nude but tasteful, nonetheless, picture thing.

    1. Marcus says:

      March 31, 2011 at 1:44 PM -

@Jason — I hear you but the pictures are mandatory and I hope you’ll understand why.

First, too many people place importance on the scale and pictures tell a much more accurate story as muscle supplants the place fat once took. Sure, the scale may not move (much) but one’s physique will look drastically different.
Second, you may argue that you can look in the mirror to judge for yourself. However, you see yourself in the mirror EVERY day. It’s very easy to underestimate the progress one has made when seeing incremental progress vs. a before/after photo.
Lastly, the photos are part of the scoring we are using to determine a male and a female winner. More details on that to come.

marcus, i’d like to negotiate a side deal. i can’t participate in the challenge as it is currently constituted but i can make a good faith effort to comply with an amended whole 30 challenge. like whole 14 maybe… see you in class tomorrow to discuss. 😉

    I’m in! I’m in!

My only question since I don’t think I’ll see you before Monday….On my long marathon training runs I’ve been using GU’s or shot blocks which are definitely not Paleo. I was thinking I could substitute those with Larabars. Would that be ok or would it get me kicked out? If larabars aren’t a good idea, what do you recommend?

    1. Marcus says:

      March 31, 2011 at 1:46 PM -

@Amy — Larabars are perfectly fine. While we would recommend for everyone to use them in moderation — let’s face it, they’re a “paleo” candy bar — they are still Paleo, so feel free to use them on your training runs.

I’m in. Is anyone else going to do the CSA in April? They aren’t responding to my emails, or they hate me for sending them too many.

the “in moderation” portion is ok for vegetarians still, right?

I will follow along this diet after 4/10, but I can’t officially declare that I’m in because I will be drinking alcohol next week. Yes that’s right, I have it in my calendar to drink alcohol. Because if it’s no in my calendar it’s not happening.

If I can participate without a partner and donate money to pool, I am in.
I don’t want to ruin it for a partner, b/c I know I won’t be clean for the month. I am setting myself up for failure and I am ok with that. My excuse is that I do not have the fortitude to not eat cake (and many other misc. non-paleo items) on my daughter’s 2nd bday.

    1. Marcus says:

      March 31, 2011 at 1:49 PM -

@Matt/Mike — For those that want to participate but know they will not be 100% adherent, I’m totally willing to match those persons up so they don’t sabotage another. Granted, once that cheat happens, you’ll be out of the contest, but you can still take pictures and benefit from seeing others’ food logs for your own meal ideas.

  • Melina says:

    March 31, 2011 at 1:40 PM -

I’m in, I already sort of stick to Paleo, but cheat so I’m pretty excited to see how it works out to be really strict for this month.

I’m not quiet up to this challenge. I like beer too much. Said it.

While on the topic of food items, I first had “Okinawan Purple Sweet Potato” (ref: Mark’s Daily Apple blog) while in Hawaii – it was delicious. Does anyone know where to pick them up locally? I’ve not seen it in the Whole Foods in Santa Monica (so it might be at the Super Huge Whole Foods in El Segundo). Thanks!

      March 31, 2011 at 2:27 PM -

@Mark — you may have better luck finding those at an Asian market. I think Ruth recently made some, so she can chime in.

@Mark, found them at Ranch 99 in Gardena. No doubt they will be in Marukais and Mitsuwas as well!

I am not in. This one time I will not cave to the peer pressure that is Intrepid (positive thought it may be). I know I won’t be able to make it and my reasoning is very similar to M^2’s. However, in a show of support I will go from my current eating primal 5 days a week and try to eat paleo 7 days a week during the month. I’ll probably fail in that as well, but hey I’m trying :)
