Today we wish a very Happy Birthday to one of Intrepid’s OGs, Anna. While she might be pint sized in appearance, her presence is very well known in the gym, whether it’s harassing Marcus or cheering on her WOD-mates. When I asked Brian if he’d like to write a post for his wife, he said he had already asked Anna’s OG chick-mances to write a little something (much like Brian’s bro-mance birthday post from Nick and Jake).
Today is a very special day. My lil’ Anna bo-bana is turning another year older, and I have been given the honor to write a few (okay several) words on her special day.
At this point in time, not a whole lot of Intrepids know who I am. I was one of the original gangstas that was a part of the infamous 7pm Varsity Crew back at the first Intrepid box in 2009. Even before I became a part of this elite group, I started out at Crossfit Intrepid at the urging of my then boyfriend, now husband Drew. I was definitely hesitant to join a gym that didn’t have any TVs, let alone a locker room with a functioning shower. Don’t judge me, I was still in globo-gym la la land! So, with a few little nervous butterflies I came in to take the fundamentals and unknowingly drink the Kool-aid.
What I remember most about that first day is walking in and immediately having every single person in class come up and greet me. I would later find out that you were punished with burpees if you didn’t introduce yourself to a newbie, but at this point I was blissfully unaware. The first person that came up to meet me was Anna. She immediately made me feel at home and I was so happy to find out that everyone was as nice and encouraging as her. As most of you know, when you go to a globo-gym for a while, you forget that you can actually TALK to people while working out! By the second and third day, Anna and I were fast friends.
As I’m sure you all know, Anna is a bad ass. She would basically kick my ass on every WOD. However, what she probably doesn’t know is that she is one of the main reasons why I stuck with CrossFit. Every single time she got done with the WOD (way before me) she would sit there and yell and cheer for me until I was done. If that doesn’t motivate a person to get it done, what will? I looked up to her and her capability to complete a WOD in such great time inspired me even more to try harder. Because of her, I stopped being afraid and really started pushing myself to get new PRs and had Anna there cheering me on every step of the way.
Even more than her infectious positive attitude, her bad ass-ness and her awesome party planning skills, the one thing that I miss the most are her hugs! Since moving from lil’ El Segundo to San Diego and then to Connecticut, I have yet to find someone who is as amazing as Anna, outside of the gym and out. Anna my love, I miss you and cannot wait for a glorious reunion that I promise will happen as soon as we make our way back out to Cali! I hope you have the best birthday you’ve ever had, and know that you are so loved by so many people.
Happy Birthday to you my darling!!
Anna and I started our CrossFit careers about the same time in 2008 in a storage unit of sorts in Lawndale. That’s also where we would meet Ruth, Sean and Marcus.Anna, and her then-boyfriend, Brian, aka Brianna, and I were regulars in Marcus’ 7 pm class and we bonded instantly. Anna’s energy, and especially her smile and laugh are some of the best medicines on this planet. She interestingly has a knack of making you laugh hysterically even though she is most likely bagging on you, or throwing you under the bus. But because it’s my lil Anna, I know it’s always out of love.
The girl knows your capabilities and strengths more than you do, and she’s been the best cheerleader for me inside the gym and out. Once Ruth and Sean opened Intrepid at the old spot on Franklin – we all soon followed them, working out with minimal equipment – but we didn’t care. It was like training was secondary, and being together was primary.
And then the little broke her clavacle. I was so sad because I wasn’t going to see her as often, although she’d stop by and visit, especially when Brian was working out (Pasta Power Duo! Did you know she makes her own pasta!) But as soon as the doctor gave her the OK, she was doing one-armed everything – because she’s bad-ass (and she was still beating me at WODs).
She is such a strong female athlete and one I’ve always looked up to – PR after PR, after PR. And even when she was running circles around me, she always stayed until I and everyone in her WOD was finished. That’s just the way she is. But then Brian would slap her butt and tell her she had to go home, even though we wanted to stay and play after class
I have to add that some of my best times at CFI was also with our sisters, Stephanie and Jenna. It was Marcus’ favorite time of the day when us four got together – ask him! I never knew you could bond over weights, but that we did, and I’m so grateful that Ruth and Sean provided us a place to do so.
Love you, Anna! Happy Birthday Lil!
p.s. Anna shares the same name with my mom and my niece, so I knew I was going to love her, regardless. It all works out.
