I met my wife Kristi in college. I played Water Polo and she was a lifeguard at the pool on campus, so we had a lot of mutual friends. Not only did I think she was beautiful and fun to hang out with, but lifeguards were kinda hot at the time since Baywatch was at the height of popularity (I may be making the Baywatch part up). Kristi was the first sports fan/athlete that I had ever dated, and I immediatelyrealized what I had been missing. It was great having a girlfriend that wanted to watch 4 SportsCenters in a row as much as you did. She was an accomplished Cross Country runner growing up, a State Champion soccer player in High School, and a starter on the Lacrosse team in college. When we first started dating, she mentioned how she had never met a dude that could keep up with her on a run. My pride immediately invited her to go jogging (I’ve always been a strong swimmer, but a TERRIBLE runner). We ran for miles around Auburn, AL and I stayed with her stride for stride like it was no big deal. As soon as I got home, I collapsed and probably didn’t move for days. I realized I must really like this girl if I was able to will my body to run that far at that pace! Later, I realized she was totally taking it easy on me, which means she must really like me, right?!
She soon after invited me to one of her lacrosse games. She looked extremely cute in the uniform, with her short hair pinned up in pig tails & ribbons. The moment I knew I was in love though was when she hip-checked an opposing player to the ground, and then turned to the ref as he blew his whistle to proclaim through her mouthguard, “Are you kidding me ref!!!!” I LOVED this girl.
Over the past 15 years, she has brought that same passion to many adventures we’ve had together: Marriage, Kids, and most recently, spending over a year traveling in an RV to eventually settle in El Segundo from Miami. I couldn’t have asked for a better Best Friend to share my life with, or a better mother for my children. Our two sons even have her competitive spirit as they rarely miss a Kid’s Crossfitclass with Sean! I’ve learned my lesson though, and no longer claim to be able to keep up with any of them.
Happy Birthday Kristi! THE BOYS AND I LOVE YOU!
