We are all amazing. Did you know that? Not just because the human body is a complex finley tuned machine. We unknowingly fight of disease, regulate temperature and can heal ourselves from minor injuries all day. The complex web of our respiratory, nervous and musculoskeletal systems working in harmony absolutley blows my mind. For the spectacular specimens that we are, there is something truly awe inspiring about the human mind. It’s not simply about the grey matter that sits between our ears. Its about the strength of our will and how far we can push our limits.
There are often moments in an athlete’s life where they are asked to give their all. It can mean mentally pushing yourself to keep moving your legs at the end of a marathon. Digging a little bit deeper to overcome obstacles while running through the mud. Quieting the self doubt and focusing on your breath to make the last laps in the pool your fastest. No matter what the situation, if we tap into our inner strength , we can persevere. Today is Nathania’s birthday, a regular of the PM classes. Nathania was convinced that she wasn’t going to meet a personal goal she set. Her story is a great example of tapping and realizing your inner strength. Nathania just wanted to do an unassisted pull up. Here’s a conversation she had with Ruth:
Nathania: I’m so upset!
Nathania: I wanted to get a pullup before my birthday.
Ruth: You can’t do one?
She then proceeded to jump up and do her first pullup ever! Proving herself wrong and tapping into her inner stregnth and courage.
It doesn’t take a lot to tap into our inner beasts. It’s there if we need it. It’s a matter of putting aside self doubt and taking a flying leap over the cliff of the unknown. Sometimes we need to dig a little deeper to excel. As athletes we push ourselves everyday to become stronger and better. But how will we know how much stronger or better we are if we don’t test it? Happy Birthday Nathania and congratulations on attaining your goal. We wish you many more achievements in the future.
It’s the last Sunday of 2012, with 2013 hovering around the corner we should all strive to make it a year of tapping into our amazing selves, doing new things, setting goals and proving our self doubts wrong!
