Balancing the Odds 5K

By admin | In Competition, Events and Announcements | on August 24, 2012

CrossFit has done amazing things to foster communities all over the world. From the small gym community to the worldwide network, the common thread that we find endearing is that of support, friendship, and camaraderie.  A while back, some of us got the chance to work with LAPD and the at-risk youth of the Harbor area. The children ranged from 7-17 years of age and the six weeks we got to spend with them in their physical training program was incredibly rewarding. Their classes were held on Saturdays where they learned about accountability, life skills, and discipline. The instructors (most of which are officers) invested so much into these kids, often keeping in touch with them and becoming their mentors.

Recently, we were contacted by LAPD’s Southeast Division (South LA area) who is putting on a 5K on Sunday, September 9th to benefit their at-risk youth (“Jeopardy”) program.  The 5K will begin at Dockweiler Beach, and will be a flat run along the city streets and service roads at the beach. There will also be an inflatable obstacle course for the kids, vendors, food and plenty of free give-aways. All proceeds will go to support the LAPD Southeast Division “At risk youth” programs in the South Los Angeles/ Watts area.  This is a little more about their program:

The LAPD Southeast Jeopardy Program is a gang prevention and intervention program that targets “at-risk” boys and girls ages 8 through 17 and their parents. Jeopardy supports the communities’ efforts to provide our youth with a safe environment to live and grow. Gangs often lure our young people with the promise of safety, economic opportunities and a sense of identity and belonging. Jeopardy is dedicated to helping communities replace these false promises with real opportunities through its partnership with ten schools, two Boys and Girls Clubs, and one Youth Center all to provide service to over 225 participants.

Medals will be awarded to the top 3 runners in each age group for men and women and top 3 over all. Age groups: 12 & under, 12 – 17, 18 – 23, 24 -29, 30- 34, 35 – 39, 40 – 44, 45 – 49, 50 -54, 55 – 59, and 60 & older.

This shoulder of mine needs healing. Its creaking tells me to pass on this WOD. Take this. My love. My regret. And all of my apologies. Have fun today :-)

PS to those who got the reference… <3
