What are YOU doing on Saturday, September 28th? The Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) in San Diego will be hosting the 2013 BootCamp Challenge. For this challenge all participants will be running 3 miles and completing over 50, yes 5-0, obstacles. I actually did this race back in 2011 and it was not as bad as advertised. The obstacles involve climbing over hay stacks or crawling under barb wire. Some stations are pure body weight movements. With the training that we do on a daily basis I don’t see any of these obstacles being a major issue for anyone. Yes, you do have Drill Instructors in your face yelling at you to run, crawl, jump, and push faster. They can be intimidating but all I had to do was imagine the instructor was Marcus yelling at me. I tried to picture Marcus wearing camouflage and a little hat and I was good. These Drill Instructors are only trying to motivate you to get to the next obstacle and finish the race just like coaches at the gym want you to finish the WOD.
Unless they have altered the course in the last 2 years, it mainly consists of pavement and hard dirt. It is also 100% flat and I don’t think they would be adding any hills, but a little hill work never hurt anyone.
There are three different ways you can register for this event. The first is an individual. You alone will be trying to take out the competition by running and getting through the entire course as fast as possible.
The other two options are competing as a 3 person team or a 5 person team. From what I remember you can sign up as an all male, all female, or mixed team. If competing as a team I do know that everyone on your team MUST cross the finish line together. No one is left behind.
Competing as a team is the part where I want to see Intrepid involved. Since the event is not until September, more specifically late September, you can definitely save the date. I would love to do this race again and I am hoping to put together at least one team. Whether it is a 3 person team or 5 does not matter.
Some general information about the race includes: check in time starts at 630am, hotels around the base so you can avoid an early morning commute, free parking, free t-shirts for participants! Additional information can be found on the link above.
Between now and May 31st, the total price is $36.86. It will be$34 for the Price and $2.86 for the Fee. I imagine the prices will rise after May. Please let me know if anyone is interested because I want to put this team together as soon as possible. Ashley B. has already committed to being on the Intrepid team. Looking for a few more good men and women, see what I did there? Post to comments if you want to join in on the fun!
On May 18th the Long Beach Rowing Association will be hosting a “Learn To Row Day” from 9am to noon. Participants will not only learn how to row on a Concept 2 Rower, but also learn how to row on the water! Check out the site if you are interested.
Lastly, I would like to give Tyler S. a shout out. He will be in a water polo tournament this weekend and his team is looking to capture 1st place after taking 2nd place last year.
