CrossFit Superstitions

By admin | In Events and Announcements, Psychology | on October 29, 2010

Make sure you come dressed in costume for today’s WOD!!!

Or suffer the burpee penalties!

Some of you may be superstitious in your daily lives, avoiding things such as walking under a ladder, opening an umbrella indoors, shunning black cats, or throwing spilled salt over your shoulder. Others think that subscribing to superstitions is silly. But how many of you have CrossFit Superstitions?

In the spirit of Halloween and today’s costume WOD, we’re going to explore and expose the wacky habits of some of our members (and coaches) which can only be explained as superstition, be it a favorite rower, bar, pull up band, abmat, or jump rope. Here are a few:

  • Steph & Anna need the “good clamps” and the “good rack” to lift heavy
  • Brian can’t have me looking in his direction during double unders
  • Avelyne and I have to wear socks or we can’t lift heavy
  • Certain 7pm girls think running will bring them 7 years of bad luck
  • Melissa needs Jay-Z to lift heavy
  • I can only use certain 5# and 2.5# plates because they “feel” lighter
  • Brian only lifts with ‘Lolita’
  • Sean’s weights have to face the same direction on the bar
  • Certain guys need their 45# bumpers to match exactly
  • Marcus thinks country music will bring him 7 years of bad lifting

Feel free to add to the list!

Becky and Jenna can’t know how much they are lifting (otherwise they will fail)

Viv must turn her head to the side during presses

    Steph’s warm up reps 5-4-3-2-1

Becky can’t work out for 2 weeks after a Vegas trip (oh wait, that may not be a superstition)

Brian only uses the pullup bars under the door

    Jake’s lucky shorts

I’m sure I have more, stay tuned :)

I have to clear my nose before every single workout to maximize o2 intake

it’s hard for me to start a WOD without marcus yelling at me.

michael, the nose blowing thing is pretty hilarious, and also totally functional, it seems. i dig it.

the jay-z thing is functional as well. i mean, i’m only working out to keep my pimp hand way strong, so i gotta have a reminder of what i’m working toward in the background.

best of luck, jenna and drew!!! come back soooooooon!!! :)

I can’t use the two stationary racks to the left and I can’t start a lift with my feet on the cracks between mats.

@Drew: That’s cuz somehow those are the ‘shortie’ racks! Hope you two can stop in today!!

I can’t do a work set at the same time someone else is going right next to me. I wait until they are finished or try to go before them.

All I can say is Justin rocked the costume category today. Buzz Buzz.

Anna, don’t you also have a specific rope for dubs?

When I’m at the far left rack, there’s a specific hole in the wall that I focus on for any heavy squatting.

I also always position my right hand before my left hand on any bar.

And some of you do a little shimmy before settling into your cleans/snatch positions which I find hysterical!

Dang it missing the costume WOD! Stupid work. Take lots of pictures for me please.

Drenna good luck to you in all of your future endeavors/WODs! We will miss you but you better come and visit!

I have to take a nervous pee before every WOD. It’s unavoidable and I hate it.

  • Jenna says:

    October 29, 2010 at 10:20 AM -

I have to take at LEAST 3 steps back from the rack before i do a lift, and i also don’t like being in the cracks!

Anna: so true! Becky and I can’t count worth shit, but honestly it’s probably the best thing for us! :)

Going to miss you peeps so so much! We will definitely be visiting, don’t worry :)

    Love you all!

Mike’s wod attire is a sleeveless shirt or no shirt at all b/c regular cotton shirts are too constricting for his huge muscles :)
Anna likes the pullup bar at the door standing on a box setup.
Chris and his post wod recovery shake ritual.
Alia and her lucky jump rope.
I know some you peeps don’t like doing dubs on the mat.

  • Stephanie says:

    I will miss you Drenna!!
    Hope you come tonight :)
    You guys better visit . . .

    October 29, 2010 at 11:51 AM -

    oh, i’m pretty sure i do the pre-lift shimmy…

  • Al says:

The numbers on the 5 and 2.5 pound change plates have to be facing inward towards the bar so that they cannot be seen otherwise lifts will be missed. True story.

Looking forward to seeing the Intrepid lifters this weekend!

Best of luck to you Drew and Jenna! I’ve only met half of your dynamic duo but I wish you all the best nonetheless!

  • Scott says:

    October 29, 2010 at 3:46 PM -

@Steph – I’m with Mike on the sleeveless shirt thing. I think it’s because my muscles are so weak that a little cotton pulling on them will dramatically reduce the weight on my lifts. Seriously!!

I also have to twist a bar in the rack 3 or 4 times to get maximum strength. It’s like I’m coiling a spring to get strength.

And on the bench I MUST roll the bar to the front of the rack before I begin. Lifting from the back of the rack would TOTALLY ruin the lift.

Michelle has to explain how everyone else cheated if she didn’t come in first on any event. Wait, is that a superstition? Or a psychosis? :)

BTW, I love how all the couples gleefully and publicly throw each other under the bus. :)

Jenna & Drew…good luck with the move….with work…with finding another CF box. I wont say a new box, because nothing can replace CFI, it’s just another box. You’re becoming CF polygamists and promising to visit often! Right? :)

  • Scott says:

    October 29, 2010 at 3:50 PM -

BTW, how many times are you going to use the same picture of Dustin putting weight on the bar? It’s only been like a week or two since last time. Are Alia and Dustin getting their royalties?

    1. ruth says:

      October 29, 2010 at 4:23 PM -

@Scott, dang it I was afraid to use anyone else’s photo for fear of being accused of calling them superstitious or unlucky! I caught enough flack for using your photo (and Anna’s) during the caveman hygiene post!!! 😛

  • Michelle says:

    October 29, 2010 at 11:36 PM -

Scott, I’ve only done that once! Granted, it was a version of pin the tail on the donkey at a 1 year old’s birthday party, and there wasn’t even a prize involved, but several people were cheating A LOT.
