Over the past few years the movement to go green has grown and has become mainstream. Everyday there are new ‘earth friendly’ products to make our lives easier, maybe a cleaner and with less chemicals or a product based on natural ingredients. A while back Ruth had posted a guide to products that most people use against bare skin and how harmful they could potentially be in Skin Deep. Personally, I used this guide as a outline for making choices when purchasing products relating to health and beauty. I was shocked when I visited the links on the site and was floored at the amount of chemicals I was actually applying to my skin.
While there are products offered at organic food stores and health food retailers, they can be quite expensive. If the average person chose to switch their entire lifestyle over to using products free of this ingredient or that chemical it could easily add up. That would take away from important things like a food budget (that just can’t happen). I wanted to make alternatives to products I used, something simple and less chemical-ey. I recently came across this site One Good Thing By Jillee.
Brilliant. Jillee is my new favorite blogger! Many of her alternative recipes are direct replacements for products we use everyday. I have tried a few of her projects. Home made deoderant, toothpaste and even a product I love called Loo-Pourri. These in particular are real winners in my book. She also features a library of gluten free recipes. Her team do a wonderful job of breaking down these D.I.Y. projects with clear descriptions and pictures.
If you have a free Sunday afternoon, and you want to try some alternatives to health and beauty products or cleaning products, I would encourage you to try some of her suggestions. Most are inexpensive and fairly simple to make.
