I’m always on the lookout for obstacle races in the surrounding area. The reason being is that I think they are super fun and challenging. A couple of days ago I got a flyer in the mail advertising the Down & Dirty Obstacle Race. The flyer had the website on it so I decided to check it out. On the homepage there is a short YouTube clip of previous races. It looks like this particular race has gotten more and more popular since the first event was held back in 2010. This year alone there will be 12 races with each one being held in a different city across the US. This event is sponsored by Merrell Inc. and they work closely with the US Military for this event. At every race you will have a different mix of military personnel collaborating to push you through the race. A nice chunk of the race earnings is used to send care packages to deployed U.S. Military.
The race itself looks like a blast. Participants can sign up for the 3 mile course or the 6 mile course. Both courses contain over 20 military style obstacles. On the webpage I saw cargo net climbs, mud pits, water crossings, wall climbs, and even push up stations. You can be sure that you will be covered in mud. They also have obstacles that challenge your strength such as carrying sand bags over a certain distance and hoisting weight using a rope and what appears to be a cement block. At each obstacle it looks like you will have plenty of drill instructors keeping you motivated.
The Los Angeles event is being held at Castaic Lake on April 13th. It is about one hour north of the gym. Registration has been open for some time now so unfortunately the prices are slightly high. From now until March 23rd the price is $65 and increases $5 more until a few days before the race. It looks like if we can get a group of at least 10, each person will get a $5 refund. The 9:30am heat is sold out, but the 10, 10:30, and 11:00am heats are still open. If we can get enough people to participate I would love to put an Intrepid team together. Post to comments if you want to get down and dirty on April 13th!
