Feliz Cumpleaños

By Marcus | In Athlete Profiles | on August 25, 2011

I have to admit doing a little ninja edit to yesterday’s post. You see, today is the birthday of our very own T.I.T. Jake and we are fortunate enough to have another guest post roast, courtesy of Brian. Sean had added his own message to Jake as part of his post that I removed:

A big birthday shoutout to Jake today! As one of Intrepid’s OG’s, it has been awesome watching you grow both as an athlete and a coach. You’re an integral part of the Intrepid fam and it just wouldn’t be the same without you. Have a great birthday!

But now, onto the fun… here’s Brian’s roast:

Jake has always been a mainstay for me at CrossFit.  A great athlete, a nice guy, constant smile… I mean its no wonder I immediately hated him from the start.  Despite this we developed a nice CrossFit bro-mance since we were about on the same level and seemed to always push each other… that is until running workouts came up.   I mean… it almost was like we were meant to be arch-rivals.  He was better at the thing I was the worst at (running) and I was better at everything else (blatant lie). So in those instances where running WODs came up I just tried to keep him from lapping me twice… I mean he’s like Forrest Gump without the mentally challenged part (well… not completely sure about that… cant trust someone that smiles that much).  I would try to leg sweep him at the start, throw trash cans to trip him up, bribe motorists to run him over…nothing worked.  I’d be flying (struggling) through a workout and he would be right on my heels… or passing me (most likely passing me for the second time). He is like a machine. Nowadays, the first thing I do upon entering the gym is to look for his times… gasp… complain to Marcus that Jake was somehow cheating… then make a very feeble attempt at surpassing it.  I’m totally convinced that Jake started working out at 5pm to save me the embarrassment of getting smoked in person, and for that I probably have to thank you (reluctantly).

In all seriousness the guy is nothing short of amazing.  The most humble guy you’ll ever meet, stellar athlete, great attitude… just a perfect example of what an Intrepid should be. You really are a motivation to us all, not only for your WOD times but your dedication and work-ethic.  It’s really been a joy to see you develop and exceed all expectations over the years. In fact the only expectations you didn’t exceed were your own.  Looking at last years B-day post you list your goals as a 500lb DL…(How’s that coming?) and finish in the top 15 for the December NLP (must’ve had problems signing up for that one too). Only kidding!  So please join me in wishing our very own “Son of Je-Zeus” (pronounced Hay-Zoose for all you Caucasians out there) a FELIZ CUMPLEAÑOS

A “Congratulations” is also in order as Jake recently obtained his freshly minted CrossFit Level 1 Certification… Please now refer to him as Coach Jake…or Coach Jake-a$$ behind his back.   And as a new coach I’ll leave you with some words of wisdom that will help guide you in your future coaching endeavors (modified slightly).

“Jake better not get in my face… cause I’ll DROP that mother-effer”…

 -Brennan Huff, (Step Brothers, 2008)

Happy Birthday Jake… keep up the great work my friend.

Happy birthday Jake, its always fun trying to keep up with you for the first 30 seconds of a work out. (At least Nik is gone for a few months, or else its down right depressing). But seriously thanks for all the help over the past few months, your always the first one to lend a hand or help push someone mid wod.

    Wow you are old.

Sure I look forward to working out at the gym, but I think I look forward more to the excitement of the Brian-Jake rivalry for the day. The bro-mance has definitely blossomed into a full force relationship (face the truth Anna).

Happy birthday to guy everyone can’t catch!

I’m totally late on this…but I have to make sure I’m on the website for this: HAPPY BIRTHDAY JAKE!!!!! Seriously homey, other than BriAnna you truly made the Box feel like family for me when I started. While work has kept me away more than I would like, my heart is always right there sweating it out with you guys and you’re an irreplaceable part of that. Hope you have a great birthday weekend!

Jake, Happy Belated, Birthday! You are a tremendous athlete, humble, dedicated and driven. Like Brian said, it is fun to try to keep up with you on WODS as you set the bar so high and make everyone else a better athlete just trying to hang with you. I am glad you are in the 5PM class – except when there is running and I have to say goodbye at the start! Happy B-Day, Coach Jake!
