Most of us who eat paleo try to eat grass-fed, pastured beef, eggs that are stamped ‘certified humane,’ and organic fruits and veggies. The obvious reasons for this are the nutritional benefits, but in the big picture lies a more global mind: Sustainable Farming is to Mother Earth as Paleo is to our bodies. What benefits Big Mama ultimately benefits us.
During our Fantastical Misadventure this last week, we had a chance to visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium where we found a pocket guide (as well as a sushi guide) for Seafood Watch, a guide that tells you what kinds of fish are the ‘best choice,’ a ‘good alternative,’ and ones to ‘avoid’ based on where you live. They said “In 2003, the Pew Oceans Commission warned that the world’s oceans are in a state of “silent collapse,” threatening our food supply, marine economies, recreation and the natural legacy we leave our children.”
Since we’ve been posting some Urban Paleo Forager ideas of local fish joints, this guide can help you make informed choices when ordering. Most the ones to avoid are on the list because they have been caught or farmed in ways that harm other marine life or the environment. For those of you who want to know more, check out how they make their recommendations. They also note which kinds of fish to limit the consumption of based on mercury levels.
It’s a pretty neat guide which is also available as an app for your iPhone. Ultimately, it’ll help you at least make informed decisions. I know we’ve previously posted about the benefits of wild caught fish, but in the end, we’ll need to find the balance between nutritional value and the environmental impacts.
You’ll notice that some farmed fish are recommended over wild caught on this list and vice versa. They go into detail about the issues that we were already aware of with aquaculture, but also point us in the direction of responsibly farmed fish as an option.
