For the Love of the Sport

During the announcement of Open WOD 13.4, we got to hear a little about each of the athletes that demoed the workout for us live, Graham Holmberg and Chris Spealler. They both had their best finishes in 2010, Graham Holmberg won the Games and Chris Spealler took third. While Spealler has never won the Games, he is the only athlete who has participated in the all 6 Games competitions and is considered one of the greatest competitors in the sport of fitness and is a true crowd favorite.

While we’re all completing the Open workouts, the Games season is upon us and it’s easy to get caught up in the hype. During Spealler’s interview, he brought us all back down to earth. He reminded us that CrossFit is not the Games, the Games are just a piece of CrossFit and that CrossFit is really about the people who lay their heart out there everyday. That really is the addicting quality about CrossFit, you come into the gym everyday and accomplish something you would never imagine you’d be able to do. There is nothing like the CrossFit community, where you not only come in to better yourself, but you also come in to watch and cheer on your classmates as they throw down everyday and meet and beat their fitness, nutritional and overall wellness goals. Each day you are inspired by others and others are inspired by you.

It’s funny how simple statements from athletes like Spealler about the CrossFit community and pushing your limits can generate an emotional response. It just goes to show how CrossFit and specifically the Intrepid community has inspired me. I appreciate the opportunity to step back from the Games hype and remember why I became a trainer, why I love going to the gym everyday and how much the CFI community has touched me.
