Intrepid Farewell: Jason

By admin | In Athlete Profiles | on March 16, 2012

Brian was kind enough to eloquently pen Jason’s farewell roast post and put into words what all of us who know Jason is thinking and feeling as we say goodbye to one of our own.  Hopefully, Jason will stay true to his word and ‘skype’ into work out with the 4pm class (7pm EST) so we can still see him every day!

If Crossfit Intrepid were a bar Jason would definitely have his personal mug hanging behind the counter and a favorite barstool conformed to his butt cheeks. He has been a mainstay in the gym for such a long time, it’s tough to find someone who doesn’t know Jason.  He would continually eclipse 3 classes chatting up the previous class to get their strategy and cheering on the class after his as they gutted through theirs.  It’s funny ’cause for someone who personally hates the attention while he’s working out he is incredibly encouraging to everyone else. That may be because he just doesn’t want to be noticed for his half squats or be caught on camera making a painful face or with his hair out of place. Or it may be because this incredibly humble guy just doesn’t want you to notice how much of an animal he is. Jason consistently puts up huge numbers which is amazing for someone who spends 0.05 seconds warming up.

A consummate salesman (being his profession) Jason has been one of the BEST marketers for the gym, bringing in members from all across the South Bay, most who have stayed and become important members to the family. Not many people love CFI as much as Jason does. In fact the only things that overcome his fondness for CFI are his love for his wife Kelly and gorgeous little girl Sophia. If you ever want to see the brightest smile you have ever seen ask him how his little one is doing. So its not surprising he does whatever it takes to make them as happy as they can be.

That being said its with heavy hearts that we must say goodbye to one of the gyms most indelible members as Jason, Kelly and Sophia will be moving to Pennsylvania shortly (along with all of Sophia’s stuffed animals including the one that talks like a French Al Pacino). While its tough to see you go we here at CFI wish you all the best in your move. You and Kelly are going to be incredible parents to little Sophia and will have an amazing opportunity to raise a family with room to grow. I can sincerely speak for everyone here and say that you are an irreplaceable part of the family and you will be sorely missed….. except when you fart mid workout… personally im not going to miss that. We wish you luck in your move and hope you better keep in touch.

Noooooooo!!!! What a sad day. Intrepids, I am an intrepidian (?) from way back in the day who used to work out at a local global gym. When I first began to dabble in CrossFit (while Nick was busy doing the 300 workout), my buddy and I would see Jason at the gym everyday and our best guess was he probably worked there because he knew every single person there and made a point to talk to all of them. We were off in the corner one day aggressively getting after two of Jason’s favorite things- air force push ups and half depth squats (jk Jason) and he came over and said, “hey, whatcha doing?”. We said, “Oh, we are trying this new ‘fad’ called CrossFit.” He enthusiastically suggested we stay messing around and just do Cindy. Well, I didn’t see Jason for another week as I was unable to get to the gym, much less get out of bed. The next time I saw him I was in the same area doing some push ups and he again said, “what are you doing?” to which I replied, “I’m warming up.”. He said, “oh, I don’t do that.” and walked over to the squat rack and loaded 225 on the bar 17 seconds after arriving in the gym!! I quickly joined Intrepid and like to believe I helped Jason pull the trigger on his decision to join. Jason, you will be missed, and for all of our sakes, just pretend to do some static stretches before you one rep max your deadlift!!

-yes Anna, I still sign it even though you can already see my name :)

The old guys club is feeling a serious void. Safe travels to you and the family. You will be missed. I will definitely look you up next time I am in PA.

    Jason,

Definitely a low blow to the 5pm class. You were the first guy at the gym to get to know the newest members and cheer them on.

Although i wont miss your flatulence pre-wod, i will miss our man class rituals low blowing and questionable homoerotic compliments… You’re always the first to notice a haircut, new clothing, probably even teeth cleaning.

I put up some of my heaviest lifts (probably not ready for them) thanks to coach Jason’s positive attitude. IE “if pulled 345 you can do 400” or if you did “5 pull ups you can do 10 next set” and so forth.

We all know you will be back once you get your fill of snow followed by east coast humidity. Congrats on the new start with the family and best of luck.

    Keep in touch,

    Troy

I’m so sad. Jason you were such a great face to meet and see at the gym, especially at the beginning when I didn’t know what I was doing but always got a motivating cheer from you. I am really gonna miss you while I’m starting it back up again and still feel like i dont know what im doing.
Good luck to you and you’re family. I hope the California sunshine will bring you back to visit (or stay) often & soon!

Jason, we will all dearly miss you. Who else is going to encourage me to blatantly ignore Ruth and increase my weight! Your enthusiasm for CFI is contagious. Your overflowing encouragement of every single person who walks in the door has helped build the amazing familial atmosphere. Your constant prodding to slow down the warm-up run brings a welcome laugh every single day. Who else is going to help us find the shortcuts around the block! Who else is going to casually tea bag me during the bench press….OK so maybe I wont miss that as much!

We wish you all the best in your new adventure. I’m sure you’ll find a great CF box in Pennsylvania and bring the same energy and encouragement to a new group of friends. The most challenging WOD of your life awaits…..AMRAP 18 years…raise a daughter! And we know that you’re attacking that challenge with all the excitement and energy you have in your huge heart….and of course without any “warm-up”. :)

We wish you and Kelly and Sophia all the best. We hope to see you back in South Bay from time to time….maybe when you’re buried in a bit too much snow in PA.

    Take care my friend!

    Scott

Just for Anna, we should all sign our names even though it says our name above the post! :)

Thanks and like everyone else has said you will be missed.

Man I came here today to WODSHOP and I find this?! Unfair. We’re losing one of the biggest personalities of the box. Jason it has been a great pleasure to have met you at the gym. You are going to be missed by everyone that has known you and those that haven’t met you will be missing out in having the pleasure to meet such a great guy.

Best of wishes out there in PA, definite keep in touch with the box and get a Facebook account!

Jason, your reputation in the gym is unlike any other. I mean, as your partner I could I literally sh*t my pants (during a WOD or not) and not only would anyone not believe it was me, you would get blamed for it, get yelled at, deny it, and all the while I’m standing there unnoticed in a puddle of my own filth. For those of you that are offended at the thought- Welcome to 5pm man class! I’d like to acknowledge Jason as the founding member, do not worry, the boys will carry on your legacy. For those of you that haven’t noticed, Jason and I have been carrying on an unassuming bro-mance for the past couple months and I’m heartbroken he’s leaving. His legacy will continue as us guys will honor Jason’s absence by leaving early for runs, not stretching, and “dicking around” on Olympic lifts. In all seriousness, you have been an inspiration to us all. From day one you encouraged Troy and I. We really appreciate it and will miss you as you move on. 5pm won’t be the same. Good luck to You, Kelly, and little Sophia.

Jason, you’ve been having a bromance with Tyler?! I thought Scott was the only one you tea bagged and took to the north end on lunch dates.

Anyway, the 5 pm dudes class will not be the same without you. I will miss your words of encouragement, your attitude, sense of humor, and even your false starts. I’ll also miss getting yelled at by Ruth when you, me , and Troy hang out in a corner chatting too loudly post wod.

I wish you, Kelly and Sophia best of luck in PA! We will miss you!

Dude! I can’t believe you’re not gonna be around to grace us with your nasty farts and hilarious high school stories about farting. And who can forget the tradition of starting runs before the clock starts and on the off chance you start on time you let us all know you didn’t cheat for once. But for realzies, its been awesome and thanks for the motivation and laughs. Best of luck in PA!

Ugh everybody is so eloquent and I’ve been drinking all day.

Jason you will certainly be missed. Brian and I both let out a little cheer every time we pull on the parking lot and see the Acura. I love how you take a genuine interest in everyone you meet, and aren’t afraid to test the shit talking boundaries. Baby Sophia is lucky to have you. Keep in touch or next year’s Intrepid Christmas present will be a trip for Ruth and Sean to count your reps.

I’m cutting through the parking lots for the next month in your honor.

    Jason, Jason , Jason….

I’m not sure I can say more than what’s already been said. You’re one of the first people I met when I joined Intrepid and you instantly made me feel welcome. I love having you call me out on my no rep pull ups, encouraging me to do more than I think I can and talking about PAC 12 football.

You will definitely be missed and Sophia has one awesome dad! Good luck in PA and I can’t wait to see you at Intrepid sometime soon!

Wow – I am touched by your responses but I am still holding out for a few more until I decide how much I will miss everyone! 😉

Okay, I already miss CFI. Perhaps I need to start my own box where flatulence, tea bagging and false starts are not only commended but rewarded; a place where I could be The Emperor like Marcus! Yes, I can dream.

Thank you guys/ gals for often being the best part of the day: for your support, friendship, generosity, and humor. I will miss everyone. And incidentally, it’s the broccoli!here

Jason, I am sorry to hear that you will be leaving CFI. I will miss the pre and post WOD conversations we had. It was good to have another “distinguished” gentleman to share thoughts with. Take good care of your family and yourself.

    Cheers,
    Tom Ralph
