7 Foods Ok to Buy Non-Organic

By admin | In Nutrition | on December 18, 2012

In this day and age where GMOs, pesticides, and growth hormones are rampant in our food, it can get expensive buying everything organic. We already posted about shopping organic on a budget a while back (organic: foods you eat with peel vs non-organic: foods you have to peel) as an option.    Mark’s Daily Apple  just posted about “7 Foods You Don’t Have to Buy Organic.”

But before I delve into them, I want to post his disclaimer about shopping organic for budget vs organic for principle:

However, even if the following conventional foods are relatively safe for your health, some would argue that you should still buy organic in order to support the workers and protect the environments exposed to agricultural chemicals. That’s totally valid, and it’s part of the reason why I try to buy organic, but it’s not what I’m discussing here. It’s a topic for another time.

With that said, here are a few of the foods he mentions:

  1. Coconut:  Based on the results from a some studies, it appears that no pesticides appear in coconut products even if the coconut was exposed to pesticides while farmed.   It should be noted that these tests found none of the ‘pesticides they were looking for,’ for whatever that’s worth.  Still, it would seem the coconut is a pretty hardy fruit.
  2. Avocado: It’s possible the scaly skin of the avocado just keeps out the pesticides, but avocados also come up pretty clean when tested.  However, copper fungicides are often used by organic and non-organic farmers and one avocado has approximately your daily requirement already!
  3. Honey: It boils down to bees are bees and will fly around to different flowers.  They can pick up pesticides in the air since they fly up to 5 km away from their hive.  Just buy local and raw honey.

Read about the other four foods here on his article.
