Origins of Weightlifting

By Sean | In Olympic Weightlifting | on January 26, 2011

Ever wonder where the modern-day barbell came from, how Weightlifting (Snatch and Clean & Jerk) became an Olympic sport and why only those two lifts? Chip Conrad and Body Tribe Fitness put together the above video on the Origins of Weightlifting to answer such questions and many more. The video is entertaining and has a lot of great information but be warned it’s about 14 minutes long. Our friends at CrossFit Inland Valley posted the video’s link on their Twitter feed the other day and we thought it was quite interesting and post-worthy. How fitting that today we’re working up to a heavy single in the Snatch and, being the informed individual that you are, you’ll know where the Snatch came from and how it became one of the mainstays of the modern Olympic games.

We’re thinking of putting on an Informal Weightlifting Meet Sunday February 13th, at 10am. It will run similarly to our September Challenge, but with a platform and much more structure! This is a perfect way to try out a “meet” in a really informal setting and get your feet wet. Jake and Anna are already in! (Yup, under the bus!) There will be a $10 buy in, with cash prize split between top female and top male lifters (details to follow). Post to comments if you’re interested!

WOD 01.26.11

Snatch 1-1-1-1-1

3 Rounds for time:
100m Run
20 Burpees

Cash Out: Handstand Skillwork

There is no “Above Video” above. How am I supposed to know the history of Olympic lifting! And why didn’t Anna catch this when she checked the blog at 6 AM to make sure Marcus was doing his job!!

Doing my job? This was Sean’s post! 😛

Sorry guys, a minor glitch bedding the YouTube player. Should be up and running now.

I couldn’t catch the glitch, as you read above I was thrown under a moving bus this morning. Still trying to recover.

How come I’m the only one who was TOLD I’m competing in this competition?

my interest in participating in the “meet” is completely dependent on whether or not onesies are required.

I’m definately interested, but a little worried because I have a big shindig I’m attending the night before and I’m not sure if I’ll be fully rested and hydrated to be in top competing condition.

I have the same concerns as Xuan. I may come for fun and watch and cheer or … slumber party at Brianna’s??
