During this holiday weekend, some of you may have went to the theaters to see the blockbuster movie about costumed superheroes. However, today is a day to pay homage to real-life heroes — those men and women who died while serving our country in the US Armed Forces. Within CrossFit, the concept of Memorial Day is expanded, not only over the entire year, but also to include first responders such as police and firefighters.
You may have experienced this first-hand in the form of a “hero” WOD. If you’re new to CrossFit, you may still be figuring out what the heck people mean by “girl workouts” or “the heroes”. Last week, we did one of the most (in)famous girl WODs — Fran. As tough as those girl workouts can be, the heroes take it one notch higher. The reason for this is because the hero WOD is designed to honor the memory of a serviceman, policeman or firefighter who died in the line of duty. (For example, see Sean’s post about Murph.)
As you enjoy your day off from work, while partaking in some barbecue or a visit to the beach, take a moment to remember the reason for the day. Likewise, next time you see a hero workout posted, hopefully you won’t wod shop that day and come in to pay your respects — in the form of some sweat.
