This past Saturday, 13 Intrepids braved the chilly, rainy Malibu Spartan Sprint Race. For some of us, myself included, this was our first mud run experience while for others they were getting another notch on their belts. It all started back in April of this year while Tom R. was still deployed in Afghanistan. Looking ahead to the timeframe he’d be returning home Tom found the Spartan Race, got us all to sign up, and before we knew it December’s here and we’re on the picturesque Calamigos Ranch in Malibu trying to “warm-up” and stay dry before our heat.
Even though we went in one of the first few heats, the course was already extremely sloppy thanks to the rain. The 5K course had its share of uphills, downhills, and traverses through narrow trails through vegetation most of which was through thick sloppy mud. Many of the obstacles were variations of things you might encounter in a CrossFit workout but here are the ones I remember in as close to the order I recall us doing them:
Oh, I didn’t mention that if you weren’t able to complete an obstacle on the first try you had to perform 30 burpees before you could move on. If burpees weren’t bad enough imgaine doing them with rocks digging into your palms everytime you dropped down and that’s where we found ourselves on Saturday. Stations that were burpee magnets were the monkey bar station (because of the slippery grip), the wall traverse, and the spear throw. If I was a smarter man I would have gladly paid 30 burpees instead of the grueling uphill low crawl under the barbed wire. Remember those rocks I mentioned earlier, well the rain was eroding away the muddy topsoil and exposing plenty o’ rocks making the crawl a bit tougher to say the least.
Overall the Spartan Race was a fulfilling experience. Getting to bond with other Intrepids, pushing our mental and physical limits, and getting dirty made for a worthwhile time. The thirteen of us split into several groups with Holley, Michael H., Nick, Anna, and Brian finishing fastest of the bunch all around 1:21 (one hour and twenty-one minutes).
For those interested in upcoming mud runs the Spartan Race will be in the Temecula area on January 26th and 27th with an 8 mile course. Click here for more details. The Tough Mudder is coming to SoCal on Feb 9th and 10th also down in the Temecula area. The Tough Mudder is between 10-12 miles and one of the tougher adventure challenges around. I’ve heard that a few Intrepids have already signed up for this event, but click here for details. If you’ve heard of other events coming up please shout them out in the comment board.
