Suffer Together, Stay Together

By Holley | In Philosophy | on March 25, 2014

Yesterday we had a drop in come into the gym to do Open WOD 14.4 (which he absolutely crushed by the way). While he was here, a few of us got into a philosophical discussion about CrossFit, the sport’s success and the awesome results and community that come with it. He made a great point that really stuck with me about what about CrossFit made the community so great. He pointed out that in most other sports and even other fitness arenas, you don’t often show your weaknesses in a group of people that you don’t know super well. How often do you come into the gym and say, yes, I love today’s lift and every single movement in the WOD and the length of the WOD and the number of each movement? Um, I would say pretty much never. That’s what makes the community so strong, you build trust every day while showing your weaknesses, vulnerabilities and failures in front of a big group of people. It creates a bond with you and most everyone in the community. Obviously you build your strongest bonds with the people at your box, but any time you run into someone in a CrossFit shirt, you exchange a smile because you’ve both suffered a failure or some kind of humbling moment in the last week, day or hour.

Just another neat way to look at our CrossFit family and extended community… :)
