This year, for Avelyne’s birthday, we asked some members to write about their first (and/or fondest) memories of Avelyne as a coach or athlete. The replies came pouring in from across the country, from old Intrepids and new. It was obvious right away how much she is loved by our community!
Anna: I can give you one per year:
Bryant: I came in for a workout after being on vacation for about a week and I hadn’t shaved the entire time so my man-beard was in full form. Avelyne was writing names on the white board when I was walking up and I said “what’s up Avelyne,” she turned around and immediately had a disgusted look on her face and the only thing that came out of her mouth was “……..ewwwww” then she started laughing… One of the funniest memories I have from Intrepid.
Troy (keeping it classy): So i was once on a foam roller stretching out my back and as it cracked i farted at the same time, unfortunately avelyne was bending over to grab a plate off the ground and went nose first into what came out. lets just say in my opinion we became a lot closer from that point on in the 5pm class.
Becky: The very first time I tried CrossFit, Avelyne was there with me. It was for a fundraiser for Michelle Viquez’s Mom at CrossFit South Bay in 2009. We were both grumbling about not wanting to be exercising on a Saturday morning. I believe she was hungover (shhh, don’t tell Michelle). But we got through it together and so glad we did. Love you, Ave!
Laura: For me, it’s not just one specific time but every time I see Avelyn at the gym…she gives the greatest smile and goes out of her way to extend a “hello, how are you doing?”
Kathy: Once Avelyne subbed for the Varsity Class. I didn’t know my weight for the press having not done them for awhile and told her I’d figure it out as I went along. She gave me a look and said “I’m not Marcus.” She then proceeded to run the class in an efficient manner and we finished early. I commented that we never finish on time. And she gave me another look that said who do you think I am? Happy Bday Avelyne. And I also second Anna’s story about the Shakedown photographer. That was awesome.
Corrine: Avelyne…I came into the gym one day super beat up rom my day and the results of an MRI. I didn’t tell anyone, I didn’t say anything, but she knew. She messaged me the following day, and although she never knew, it was exactly what I needed to hear. Those words never left me. Since then, I’ve realized she has super powers to read what’s beneath the surface and assist others in finding their light when they think they’ve lost. Sometimes she does it with words, other times with just her smile. She is a superwoman in my eyes.
Celina: After the whole30, I was able to do three strict pull ups for the first time. Shortly after that I was in class was Avelyne, and put a purple band up for a long AMRAP w/ a ton of pull ups in it. She shot me this look (I think we can dub it the Avelyne look) and said “you don’t need that, you do pull ups now”. I begrudgingly took the band down and proceeded to get my butt kicked by the WOD. I haven’t used a band since and can do a lot more pull ups now thanks to the push I needed happy bday Avelyne! Love you!
Jake: My first week in crossfit I met Avelyne and Tabata squats. Marcus forced Avelyne and I to try it out and we both didn’t know what to expect. During the 4th round I got 11 squats and Avelyne 10. In excitement I shouted, “I’m the man!” The very next round Avelyne got 11 and I got 10. So I kindly said, “You’re the woman!” Avelyne’s ears heard differently. She thought I said “You’re just a woman.” As you can imagine I got the Avelyne Look. I quickly tried to explain what I said. 3 years later she has finally forgiven me. Happy Birthday Avelyne! It has been a great friendship filled with sarcasm and humor.
Xuan: I can’t remember the work out, but early on in my Intrepid career I did a partner WOD with Avelyne. Because of my horrible memory I can’t remember what we were doing, but I do remember that I was keeping count as she gritted through the movements. Throughout the WOD I was trying to come up with cheesy ways of keeping count of the rounds. A part of me thought she was going to kill me for being so corny while she was killing the WOD, but instead after we were finished she came up to me with the biggest smile and thanked me for the encouragement and congratulated me for my own workout (even though I did half her work in twice the time). I knew then that if the people at Intrepid were this open to accepting my cheesy-ness and so supportive, that I was in the right place. Happy Birthday Avelyne!!
Pooja: Somehow Avelyn knows exactly what i’m doing wrong on my lift… down to breathing at the wrong time! during my press, i kept failing at a certain weight. she suggested i move my hands in like by 2 milimeters (no joke!) and i got it the next time, and every time after that. she has crazy crossfit superpowers.
Michelle V: It is very difficult to come up with just one fond memory with Avelyne as I have known her nearly a life time. Definitely couldn’t give you the first because we were probably around 6 years old. But I do remember that after her first exposure to CF at the fundraiser Becky mentioned – that she was hooked!! We probably hadn’t regularly talked in years, because of life and growing up and moving away. But, from that day forward, February 22, 2009 – we had not only gained an awesome CrossFitter in our family, but we had rekindled a life long friendship that I am very thankful for. You are an incredible person, an amazing athlete (she always has been), the kindest and most caring friend a person could have…. and by far the strongest woman I have known (i’m not just talking muscles here either). You’re strength is inspiring, Avelyne. The Viquez Family loves you always!!
Andrea: Since I am a cf slacker I met Avelyne at a party. When she left the party to drive to Vegas with Murphy because they were bored I knew that I had found myself a new wingwoman (in her single days that is). What I didn’t know is that I had truly found a life long friend. Avelyne is the most loyal, kind hearted person I know. She has been there to hold my hair after too many drinks as well a hold my hand while I took the journey into motherhood. I am so thankful for the day Avelyne was born and am so happy to celebrate her birthday! Happy bday lady!!!
Holley: My first memory with Avelyne was when I hosted a girls night and she, Melissa and Alia showed up. I had just moved to California and didn’t have much of a kitchen or supplies. We were trying to prepare some dinner and I had pretty much nothing that anyone needed. She looked at me with a very disappointed look and asked if I had ever cooked. I was so embarrassed because the truth was I rarely cooked something that couldn’t go in the microwave, but I knew from that point on that I could always count on her for her honest opinion. I’ve grown to love that about her and it makes her a great friend and teammate!
Ruth: My first memory of Avelyne was also from that fundraiser. I remember thinking “That girl has a perfect squat! We have to get her in the gym to see what she can do!” It’s been inspiring watching her grow as an athlete and as a coach. Avelyne, you’ve touched so many lives with your generosity, enthusiasm, compassion, and genuine desire to help people reach their goals. You are the friend that shows up on moving day; the friend that is not only willing to do all the behind the scenes unglamorous stuff, but you do it with a smile; you set the bar high and help those around you keep to that standard. Thank you so much for being the amazing person you are, for being a great friend, and for being Cade’s adoptive aunt. Happy birthday!
