On a quest for a new brunch spot, I came across American Farmhouse Tavern & Dining Hall (yes, it’s quite a mouth full) on Sepulveda Blvd. in Manhattan Beach. The restaurant was previously in the same lot as Big Wok but is now in the old Szechuan location right next to Back Home in Lahaina. They are family owned and operated and describe themselves as a “neighborhood restaurant & bar, inspired by the flavors of California’s Central Coast.” What’s also notable is the fact that they use organic, farm fresh ingredients and use sustainably sourced meats.
After reading some reviews and checking out their menu online, I decided to meet a friend there for brunch last Sunday. My first thought upon parking was that there was plenty of it…PARKING…convenient and free (not always common in the beach cities). The second thing that caught my eye was the cute character of the restaurant, nostalgic black & white photos, an Alexander Graham Bell telephone and an old wagon. We were seated promptly (no waiting – another bonus) and were given the option of ordering from either the brunch or lunch menus. After perusing both and with a little help from our waitress, I decided on the Smoked Pork Chile Verde with Eggs (wood roasted pork shoulder braised in their homemade verde sauce). I was not disappointed. The portion was large enough and the meat was tender and flavorful. SCORE!
Now, I haven’t tried any of their lunch or dinner plates but with items such as Bacon Wrapped Asparagus, Tri-Tip Steak Salad, Wood Grilled Rib-Eye and California Lamb Chops, I will most definitely be back! So if your mouth is watering and you haven’t had breakfast yet, give this local establishment a shot and let me know what you ordered and what you think.
