Yesterday evening a handful of Intrepids competed in their first unofficial weightlifting meet down in Torrance. Crossfit Code 3 was kind enough to host the meet. All the competitors were either from Intrepid or Code 3 which made this particular event even more awesome. It made for a very friendly/relaxed setting. This meet focused mainly on the folks who wanted to get their feet wet in a weightlifting competition, but anyone could participate. Intrepid had five first timers (Mike L., Mike F., Kathy, Katie, and Ning) and five familiars (Mike H., Sean, Avelyne, Holley, Ruth) represent the gym. The women took the platform first and started the competition with the snatch. The order of the ladies depended on the weight they wanted to lift. Kathy and Katie were able to get new PRs with successful lifts at 78lbs and 83lbs. The men took the platform next and Mike F. ended up with a 155lb snatch for a PR. The rest of first timers set new PRs or were able to come close and/or completed three successful lifts.
After the last male attempted the snatch the ladies opened up with the clean and jerk. All three of the ladies, who never competed in a weight lifting meet, set personal records in this lift. Katie (108lbs), Ning (113lbs), and Kathy (118lbs clean then off to the side did the clean and jerk at this weight) performed very well. Coach Avelyne, in her third weightlifting meet, had a very successful clean and jerk with 153lbs. The guys also were just as successful with PRs of their own. Mike L. hit 185lbs (this maybe higher) and Mike F. lifted 205lbs. Mike H. completed his lift at 195lbs which was just shy of his PR. Not bad at all!
After all the new faces to competition were done, the coaches of Intrepid and Code 3 competed in an exhibition style format. Holley and Ruth were the only females to compete for the woman and you could tell the spectators were impressed with what they were watching. Holley set new records for both her lifts and I believe Ruth left the gym with her highest snatch ever attempted/completed. Sean left folks with “wows”, “oh man!”, and other excited expressions. His power snatch, yes power snatch, was at 225lbs.
I’d have to say that this was pretty fun to watch. Everyone from fan to lifter looked like they had a very fun time. Since the meet ran successfully I think that another unofficial event will take place in the near future. It makes for a great opportunity to get familiar with weightlifting competitions. There are lots of folks in Intrepid who I think would benefit from something like this! So be on the lookout for the next one!
